Games that need to come back: ChuChu Rocket!

Om nom nom the mices

Why don’t we have a version of ChuChu Rocket! for the iPhone yet?

There’s been an influx of new iPhone 3GS’ in the office this past week, and it got me thinking about which games should be ported over to the app store. More specifically, which games would be a great bluetooth multiplayer experience with everyone in the same room.

Wait, you mean you haven’t heard of ChuChu Rocket!? Well you my internet friend are in for a treat. It’s got everything a great game needs: addictive music, frantic multiplayer madness (where hilarity is bound to ensue), and of course, cats with zombie eyes (see pic above). I mean just look at that stare. That cat wants those mice… baaaaad.

So for those of you who didn’t own a Sega Dreamcast back in 1999, shame on you, but here’s what you were missing out on. ChuChu Rocket! is a puzzle game where your goal is to lead mice into a rocket ship and send them off into the stratosphere, all while avoiding the crazy zombie cats. In the multiplayer version, only the winner who collects the most mice has their rocket blast away.

So are the mice passengers looking for an intergalactic journey?
Or, are they fuel for these crazy future space rockets?

Yes, this game is Japanese. And yes, it’s completely bizarre. But this bizarreness is exactly what would make for a perfect madcapped 4-player iPhone game.

Now this game did make a re-appearance on the Gameboy Advance back in the day, but I think it’s due for a major comeback. C’mon Sega, I hope you’re listening.

ChuChu would make a great $2.99 iPhone game because:

  • it’s quick – each game can be over in 2 minutes. Great for a subway battle.
  • it’ll show off bluetooth – there aren’t enough games that take advance of in-room multiplayer. The tv spots showcase 3-player air hockey, but I have yet to hear anyone playing anything beyond that.
  • it’s pointer based – your thumbs won’t be constantly covering half the screen because the game was originally built to also work with a mouse.
  • it’s cute – it’s got cats. The internet loves cats.
  • the music – it’s annoyingly addictive.
  • AND, it’s Sonic Team - the same guys who made the original Samba de Amigo, so ya gotta love that.

Here’s a retro video review for you, with some NSFW language, but it’ll help give you an idea on what you missed. Enjoy.
