Funky socks are the new tie

First off, yes these are men’s socks. And yes, I’ve started wearing more like these recently. I’m trying to spread the word that it’s okay for guys to try new things with their wardrobe. And really, why not? C’mon, it’s fun!

Let me introduce you to my fun new find: Happy Socks

In internet speak, “Happy Socks are happy”. And no, I’m not talking about the kind involving catnip. Or the Urban Dictionary definition kind. I’m talking about the socks that are bold. Funky. Eccentric. Eye-catching. So much so that just showing a sliver causes women to faint in the streets. Well that’s what I’m assuming anyways. I’ve only had mine for a few weeks now, but I’m guessing it’s bound to happen, right?

FUNKY SOCKS ARE THE NEW TIE.

It’s 2010, it’s time for guys to dress up that drab daily monkey suit with some sense of excitement. I think we’ve come a point in men’s fashion where guys are comfortable wearing a bold tie. But that’s been done now and everyone’s doing it. It’s time to move on.

And I’m not the only one thinking this. Larry Rosen wants men to wear fancy socks. You should listen to him too. You might have heard of his dad, Harry.

The best thing about socks is that they’re subtle enough that most people won’t even notice. This gives guys who must dress more conservatively for work an opportunity to jazz things up without being labeled “insane” like Homer Simpson wearing his pink shirt. But for those that do notice, they’ll probably do a double-take… but in a good way.

So, take a gamble. Have some fun. I say break the boring sock rules. We’re heading into the dreariest part of winter now, so brighten up everyone’s day with a little something out of the ordinary. I’m sure it’ll make you smile.

As an extra bonus, here’s a visual representation of what I’m thinking when I wear these fancy socks:

If you’re interested, I picked up 2 pairs of Happy Socks for $15 from the Toronto men’s store Carbon.
